Portobello Road

The history

Portobello Road used to be unrecognisable 300 years ago and was no more than a country path called Green Lane. Porto Bello Farm was set up in what is now Golborne Road and was named after a town in Panama.

For was most of the 18th and 19th century, it remained unchanged, joining the districts of Notting Hill in the south and Kensal Green in the north. Development of this area meant that shops and markets were soon popping up and the district quickly became the shopping area for wealthy people living north of Hyde Park.

Until the 1950's, the market sold mostly food and other essential items. Afterwards, more traders with brick-a-brack and antiques started to arrive. The Portobello Road is now famous for its antiques and quirky items.

Currently, the vibrant and buzzing with life, Portobello Market is a ‘must-visit’ destination for all.
